Keep Your Smile Bright & Clean: Top Tips for Healthy Teeth and Gums
A bright smile does more than make a good impression; it plays a key role in your overall well-being. A healthy smile can lift your confidence, boost self-esteem, and even improve your physical health. In Singapore, where health and wellness are priorities, maintaining a strong oral care routine is key. Discover these essential tips to keep your teeth in top shape, prevent common dental issues, and enjoy a beautiful, lasting smile.
1. Brush and Floss Properly Every Day
We all know brushing twice a day is essential, but how you brush can make a real difference. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, hold it at a 45-degree angle to your gums, and brush in small circular motions across all tooth surfaces. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can wear down enamel and irritate gums, and choose a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen teeth and keep cavities at bay.
Daily flossing is equally important, reaching places your toothbrush cannot and removing plaque and food particles that can lead to gum disease and cavities. Wrap about 18 inches of floss around your fingers, gently slide it between each tooth in a C-shape, and do not skip those hard-to-reach spots. For an extra boost, consider adding an alcohol-free mouthwash to your routine; it helps kill bacteria, reduces gum inflammation, strengthens enamel, and keeps your breath fresh throughout the day.
2. Limit Sugary and Acidic Foods and Drinks
Sugars and acids are major culprits in tooth decay and erosion. Sugary foods and beverages feed bacteria in your mouth, which produce acids that wear away at tooth enamel. Likewise, acidic drinks like sodas, citrus juices, and even certain sports drinks can weaken enamel, making teeth more vulnerable to cavities. Instead, choose tooth friendly options such as milk and green tea, which can help strengthen enamel, and maintain a balanced pH balance to reduce bacterial growth.
3. Stay Hydrated for Oral Health
Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining good oral hygiene. Water helps wash away leftover food particles and acids while also stimulating saliva production. Saliva plays a key role in keeping your mouth clean, neutralising acids, and even contains compounds that fight bacteria. Make it a habit to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you enjoy coffee or tea, as these can be dehydrating and may cause staining. Keep a water bottle handy and take regular sips to keep both your mouth and body refreshed.
4. Schedule Regular Dental Check-Ups
Regular dental visits are essential, even with a thorough brushing and flossing routine. Professional cleanings can remove tartar and plaque that home care cannot reach, while check-ups allow dentists to catch early signs of gum disease, cavities, or even oral cancer. Aim for at least two visits per year for a comprehensive cleaning, though some people may need more frequent visits depending on their specific oral health needs.
Wondering who might be the affordable dentist in Singapore for you? Consider factors such as the range of services offered, location, friendliness, patient reviews, dentists’ qualifications and experience, and ease of booking. If you experience discomfort, bleeding gums, or any unusual changes, book an appointment promptly, as early detection often leads to simpler and more affordable treatments.
5. Eat a Balanced Diet
What you eat has a significant impact on your dental health. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, dairy products, lean proteins, and whole grains provides the nutrients needed to strengthen teeth and gums. Calcium and vitamin D-rich foods like milk, cheese, and leafy greens support enamel and bone health, while crunchy fruits and vegetables stimulate saliva flow, helping to clean teeth. Limit snacks between meals, as frequent snacking can lead to a constant supply of sugars in the mouth, fuelling bacterial growth. If you snack, choose options like apples, carrots, or almonds, which are both healthy and tooth-friendly.
6. Protect Your Teeth During Sports
If you participate in active sports, especially contact sports, wearing a mouthguard is crucial to prevent dental injuries such as chipped, cracked, or knocked-out teeth. Custom-fit mouthguards from a dentist would offer the best protection, fitting securely and comfortably to your teeth, unlike over-the-counter options.
7. Avoid Tobacco Products
Smoking and tobacco use are highly detrimental to oral health, causing yellowish or brown staining, bad breath, gum disease, and even oral cancer. Tobacco reduces blood flow to the gums, making it harder for them to heal and increasing the likelihood of gum infections. Avoiding or quitting smoking can prevent these stains, improve your oral health, and significantly reduce the risk of other serious health conditions.
8. Use a Mouthguard for Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is a common issue that can gradually damage teeth, leading to chipping, fractures, and even jaw pain. Many people grind their teeth during sleep without realising it, often due to stress, anxiety, or sleep disorders. If you suspect you grind your teeth, consult your dentist, who may recommend a custom-fitted night guard to protect your teeth from grinding effects.
Conclusion: Consistency is Key
Good oral hygiene doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require consistency. By adopting these essential habits and visiting your dentist regularly, you’ll not only maintain a healthy, bright smile but also support your overall well-being. Oral health is truly a lifelong commitment, and it’s never too early or too late to start making positive changes. Taking small steps today can save you from bigger dental issues in the future. A smile that’s well cared for is one of the best investments you can make for your health and confidence!
How to Stay Connected When in Singapore (WiFi, eSIM, SIM, Roaming)
Travellers visiting Singapore often find they need reliable internet to navigate this bustling city, keep in touch with family and friends, or share highlights from their trip online. While public Wi-Fi is widely available across the island nation, it can be unreliable and pose security risks. A stable connection throughout your journey offers the flexibility to plan day-to-day activities, make spontaneous changes, figure out your MRT route, or order a cab whenever needed. Find out how to get an uninterrupted and secure internet connection in Singapore for a worry-free travel experience in one of Asia’s most vibrant cities.
What Are the Best Ways to Get Internet Connection in Singapore?
Staying connected in Singapore is easy as visitors have various internet options. Make your decision based on how long your trip is, your budget, and the level of convenience you need while exploring the city. Here are some choices to consider:
- International roaming: This service allows you to use your home mobile network while in Singapore by connecting to the city’s local networks. It enables calls, texts, and data usage abroad without changing SIM cards. Check your service provider’s international roaming rates before you depart for Singapore to see how affordable they are.
- Local SIM cards: When you arrive in Singapore, either at the airport or a convenience store, buy a local SIM card and insert it into an unlocked phone. Once you do this, you’ll get access to local data, calls, and texts at reasonable rates. Activation is usually simple and offers flexibility for various trip durations.
- eSIMS: An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your smartphone, tablet, or wearable. All you need to do is select a data plan from an eSIM platform, which will be active as soon as you land in Singapore. This way, you’re spared the hassle of juggling physical SIMs during your travel.
- Pocket Wi-Fi: Rent a pocket Wi-Fi device that connects to local networks and creates a personal Wi-Fi hotspot that supports multiple devices. You can rent one of these rechargeable gadgets online and pick it up at the airport before you depart for Singapore or when you land there.
- Public Wi-Fi: Free public Wi-Fi is available at many shopping malls and tourist spots in Singapore, as well as at cafés, hotels, and the airport. It’s the most budget-friendly option for internet access, but it comes with security risks and is therefore not advised for online banking or prolonged use.
Are Travel eSIMs a Better Option for Short-Term Visits?
Travel eSIMs are one of the most convenient and quickest ways to stay connected for a month in Singapore. Unlike physical SIM cards, eSIMs don’t require swapping out your primary SIM. Instead, you simply download a data plan onto your compatible phone, and it’s instantly activated. eSIM providers like Saily offer packages specifically designed for visitors to Singapore, with simple setup instructions and plans that cover 7-30 days, depending on how long you’ll be in The Red Dot.
eSIMs offer significant benefits. You can keep your primary SIM active, so you can still receive calls or messages from your home network while using local data. They also tend to be cost-effective, especially for short-term data-centric needs. Many travel eSIMs provide competitive pricing compared to traditional roaming or local SIMs while offering similar coverage quality.
Is Getting a Local SIM Card in Singapore Worth It for Travellers?
A local SIM card can be a helpful option for visitors to Singapore who want to use their phones without relying on Wi-Fi. These SIM cards are available upon arrival at kiosks in Changi Airport and convenience stores throughout the city. They generally offer prepaid plans to suit different durations and data needs.
Activation is straightforward: simply insert the card into an unlocked phone to access the local network. Local SIM cards are designed to provide stable connectivity in the country, especially for those with high data needs for navigation, social media, or streaming.
However, this solution is best suited to travellers planning an extended stay or those looking to avoid roaming fees from their original provider. For shorter visits or moderate data needs, other options like portable Wi-Fi or eSIMs can also be considered to stay connected without committing to a local data plan.
Can You Rely on Public Wi-Fi for Internet in Singapore?
This option works best if you need occasional internet access rather than continuous connectivity. You’ll find free Wi-Fi in popular spots like shopping malls, Changi Airport, and many cafés, making it convenient for looking up maps, quick message checks, or a brief chat with loved ones.
However, relying solely on public Wi-Fi has its drawbacks. Speeds can be inconsistent, especially in crowded areas, and the networks aren’t always secure, which can put your data at risk. If you use public Wi-Fi, use a VPN for safe browsing, especially if accessing sensitive sites like net banking. Save more intensive online activities, like streaming or navigation, for when you have a private connection.
Is Pocket Wi-Fi Worth It for Group Travellers?
Pocket Wi-Fi can be a worthwhile option if you’re heading to Singapore in a group, as you can simultaneously share an internet connection across multiple devices. Typically rented through providers like Changi Recommends or travel apps, pocket Wi-Fi creates a mobile hotspot that everyone can connect to, allowing groups to split costs. For instance, a daily rental fee shared among many people can be more affordable than individual SIMs. Pocket Wi-Fi units are easy to pick up at Changi Airport upon arrival, with straightforward return options before departure.
However, there are some limitations. The device must be carried and charged, so groups should plan for battery management, especially if they’re out for long periods. While convenient, carrying an extra device may feel cumbersome for tourists already managing several items. In addition, pocket Wi-Fi providers require a deposit, and you’ll have to pay extra if the device, charging cable, adapter, or carrying pouch is lost.
Is International Roaming a Good Option to Stay Connected in Singapore?
International roaming can be a convenient option for staying connected in Singapore, especially if you only visit briefly and prioritise simplicity. This way, you can use your existing SIM and phone number without switching plans or setting up a new service to check emails and maps and quickly browse the internet. This makes international roaming the most practical option for very short visits where you need reliable connectivity without the hassle of a local setup.
However, this convenience comes at a cost, as roaming charges can quickly add up, particularly with data usage. To keep a check on expenses, contact your service provider to find out about international data packages or daily plans. Major carriers often offer to help cap daily fees to avoid surprise charges.
Conclusion
Staying connected in Singapore offers flexible options for every sight-seer, from local SIMs and eSIMs to pocket Wi-Fi and international roaming. Your ideal choice depends on your budget, need for convenience, and data requirements. For added flexibility, consider combining solutions, like using an eSIM alongside public Wi-Fi. If you’re hopping between multiple APAC regions, look into regional connectivity options for broader coverage. Ultimately, picking the right internet option ensures a hassle-free experience, keeping you online for all your navigation, communication, and sharing needs.

Beat the Heat: 9 Tips to Stay Cool in Singapore’s Humid Climate
If you’ve been to Singapore, you already know the heat and humidity can hit hard. When you step off the plane, it’s like walking into a giant steamy sauna. If you are looking for ways to survive Singapore’s punishing heat, here are nine tried-and-true tips to help you beat the heat and keep your cool in the Lion City!
1. Dress for the Climate
First things first—what you wear makes all the difference. Stick to lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking materials that allow air to flow and absorb sweat. Dark colours trap heat, so it’s best to use light shades that reflect the sun instead. You’ll also want to avoid anything too tight. Loose clothes are your best friend because they create that little breeze between you and the fabric. Trust me, in Singapore, you need all the airflow you can get!
INSIDER TIP:
Carry a small towel or a bandana with you. It sounds old-school, but having something to dab your face or neck when you’re melting in the sun can feel like a game-changer.
2. Hydrate Like a Pro
I cannot stress this enough: stay hydrated! The humidity here doesn’t just make you sweat—it zaps your energy. The more you sweat, the more water (and electrolytes) you lose. If you’re walking around sightseeing or even doing daily errands, carry a bottle of water with you at all times. If plain water feels too boring, jazz it up with lemon slices or a splash of coconut water. Electrolyte drinks are also a great option for replacing those lost salts and minerals.
FUN HACK:
Infused water bottles are trendy for a reason! Pop in some mint leaves, cucumber slices, or berries in your water bottle, and boom—hydration just got fancy.
3. Time Your Outdoor Activities Wisely
The midday sun in Singapore can be brutal, and while everyone loves a good tan, let’s be real—it’s not worth the sweat-soaked shirt. Try to schedule any outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun isn’t directly overhead. Bonus: You’ll get to enjoy the city’s parks or cultural sights with fewer crowds.
MY TAKE:
I’m a sunset person, so I love saving activities like exploring Gardens by the Bay in the late afternoon. Plus, the way the skyline lights up in the evening makes everything feel a little more magical.
4. Find Refuge in Air-Conditioned Spaces
Singapore is known for its towering malls, and I promise they’re not just for shopping. They’re a refuge from the relentless heat! Step inside for a cool-down session whenever you need it. Malls, cafes, and even public transportation are all air-conditioned, giving you plenty of options to chill out (pun intended) during the hottest parts of the day.
QUICK FIX:
When you’re out and about, look for one of the many convenience stores around Singapore. Grab a cold drink and soak up the cool air for a few minutes—it’s a quick, easy escape.
5. Use Cooling Skincare Products
This might sound like an unexpected tip, but investing in some cooling skincare products can make a difference. Gel-based moisturizers, cooling face mists, or even those cooling patches you stick on your neck or forehead are great for instant relief. Aloe vera gel is also a solid choice—it cools you down and calms any redness from the sun.
PERSONAL FAVORITE:
I always keep a small bottle of cooling face mist in my bag when I’m in Singapore. A spritz here and there is like giving yourself a mini spa treatment in the middle of a hot, sticky day.
6. Eat Light and Eat Right
It might be tempting to dive into a hearty plate of chilli crab or laksa (and trust me, you should), but heavy meals can make you feel sluggish in the heat. Try to opt for lighter meals during the day—think fresh fruits, salads, and soups. Eating spicy food can help too, as it makes you sweat, which cools your body down. Weird but true!
PRO TIP:
Coconut water is a lifesaver. It’s naturally cooling and packed with electrolytes. Bonus—it’s everywhere in Singapore, and nothing beats sipping straight from a fresh coconut on a hot day.
7. Portable Fans are a Lifesaver
This might sound silly, but having a small portable fan in your bag is one of the smartest things you can do. They’re light, USB-charged, and super effective at giving you a breeze when there’s none to be found. Pair this with a cool, damp cloth, and you’ve got yourself a portable air-con system!
MY GO-TO:
I once laughed at a friend for carrying one of these, but now I never leave home without one in Singapore. It’s been a total lifesaver, especially when you’re standing in line outdoors.
8. Take Cold Showers
This one’s a no-brainer but often overlooked! After a long day of exploring or working in Singapore’s humidity, a cold shower is exactly what your body needs. It instantly cools you down and leaves you feeling refreshed. If a cold shower is too extreme for you, try finishing your shower with cold water, just for a minute or two. It helps lower your body temperature before bed.
EXTRA TIP:
Keep your nighttime skincare routine in the fridge. Applying cold moisturizer or toner after a shower feels heavenly, and it’s a great way to stay cool before hitting the sheets.
9. Enjoy Cold Treats (Guilt-Free!)
Finally, what’s better than cooling off with something cold and delicious? Singapore has no shortage of cold treats—from icy fresh fruit juices to local favourites like Chendol or ice kacang. If you’re at a hawker centre, take a break and treat yourself to something refreshing. It’s not just about beating the heat—these treats are part of the local food culture, and enjoying them is all part of the fun.
BEST PICK:
I personally love mango shaved ice—it’s sweet, refreshing, and perfect for that mid-afternoon cooldown. Plus, it gives you an excuse to take a break from the sun!
Singapore’s heat might be fierce, but don’t let it dampen your plans. With these tips, you’ll not only stay cool but also enjoy the Lion City without sweating the small stuff. Stay chill and embrace the tropical vibes!

The minimalist design never goes out of style and remains popular for modern bedrooms in Singapore. Minimalist bedrooms are simple with clean lines and uncluttered spaces, underscoring the principle of “less is more.” The use of light tones such as whites, beiges, and soft greys amplifies natural light, making the room feel more spacious.

7 Forklift Safety Best Practices to Implement in Your Business
A common sight in industrial and storage spaces, forklifts provide immense convenience to many businesses. The presence of these machines in your facility turns lifting and moving heavy loads into easy and efficient tasks for anyone with the right skill, training, and certification.
To maximise the benefits offered by internal combustion and electric forklifts, it’s a must for your facility to adhere to well-established safety guidelines and best practices. Doing so allows you to ensure the safety of your team members and prevent possible losses due to damaged goods or other accidents. You can make safety a top priority without sacrificing efficiency by implementing the following best practices when using forklifts in your business:
Ensure That the Operator Has Proper Training and Certification
Make it a point that only trained and certified personnel can operate forklifts in your facility. This is one of the most critical safety measures that you should implement when working with forklifts. While they may appear simple to handle, forklifts are pretty complex and powerful machines. Putting these vehicles in the care of someone who does not know what they are doing can lead to accidents, including collisions and tip-overs.
Forklift operators who have undergone the right training are well-versed in the limitations and capabilities of the machine. Typical training courses for forklift operations cover subjects such as forklift controls, load handling, and driving techniques. Investing in the comprehensive training and certification of your forklift operators leads to a significant reduction of safety issues brought about by operator errors. Moreover, periodic refresher courses ensure that operators can stay up to date with the latest safety protocols.
Carry Out Daily Inspections Before Using the Vehicle
Before each shift, forklifts should undergo a thorough inspection to ensure they are in proper working order. This should include checks on critical components like tyres, brakes, lights, and hydraulic systems. If your electric forklift models come with added features like the capability to offer adequate cushioning to operators, check that the components for these features are fully functioning as well.
Identifying and addressing any wear and tear or malfunctioning parts during this assessment period can prevent accidents caused by equipment failure. This gives your team the opportunity to address worn tyres, which can reduce the forklift’s stability, or faulty brakes, which can lead to uncontrollable movements. Keep a detailed log of these inspections to ensure that your team is keeping up with regular maintenance schedules.
Familiarise Your Team with the Importance of Load Stability and Capacity Awareness
Forklifts have specific load capacity limits, and overloading it or improperly securing a load can easily cause accidents, such as tip-overs or damage to the forklift itself. Operators at your facility must be fully aware of the forklift’s capacity and ensure that loads are properly balanced and secured before moving. They should also be mindful of uneven loads or items that are not properly secured, as these can shift during transport and fall, or they could destabilise the vehicle.
Maintain Clear Visibility along the Forklift’s Path at All Times
It’s very important for forklift operators to have a clear line of sight when driving. This is especially true when they’re carrying large or bulky loads that obstruct their view. In such cases, it’s advisable for operators to tilt the mast slightly backward or drive in reverse to maintain visibility and avoid collisions with objects or people.
Additionally, having well-lit areas and clearly marked pathways helps improve visibility for both operators and pedestrians. Ensuring clear visibility is key to preventing accidents, as many forklift-related incidents occur due to blind spots or obstructed views. In some instances, working with a spotter can further enhance safety in areas with limited visibility.
Establish Forklift Traffic Rules and Communicate Them to Your Team
Setting up specific traffic rules for forklift operation within your facility is another crucial step in promoting safety. This means establishing designated forklift lanes, speed limits, and right-of-way protocols.
Implementing traffic rules creates an organised workflow where both forklifts and people can move safely and efficiently throughout the facility. The use of clear signage and marked pedestrian zones ensure that workers on foot are kept separate from forklift traffic. Forklifts should always have the right of way in their designated areas, but operators must still be cautious and yield to pedestrians in shared spaces. Putting such policies in place is an effective way of reducing the risk of accidents.
Use of Seatbelts and Safety Equipment when Operating Forklifts
Seatbelts are vital in preventing injuries during tip-overs, as they keep the forklift operator securely in the cab and prevent them from being thrown from the forklift. Additionally, requiring personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, and steel-toe safety boots helps protect operators from potential hazards during daily tasks. These rules should be implemented consistently to maintain high safety standards in the workplace.
Observe Safe Parking Practices within the Workplace Premises at All Times
When forklifts are not in use, it’s essential that operators follow proper parking procedures to prevent accidents. This includes lowering the forks to the floor, engaging the parking brake, and turning off the forklift. Improperly parked forklifts can roll or shift unexpectedly, which can pose a risk to anyone nearby. Forks left elevated or machines left idling can create tripping hazards or be accidentally activated. By enforcing strict parking protocols, you ensure that forklifts are always left in a safe and secure state and contribute to reducing the risk of accidents when the equipment is not in operation.
Remember: efficiency and convenience should never come at the cost of safety. While forklifts offer incredible convenience in moving heavy loads and increasing productivity, your team’s health and well-being must always come first. By creating a workplace culture that prioritises proper forklift use, you protect both your employees and your facility as well as enjoy the benefits offered by the use of forklifts without compromising on safety.

HARD MODE by Checkpoint Theatre
From the powerhouse team behind The Fourth Trimester (2023 Production of The Year, Straits Times Life Theatre Awards) and Normal (2015 and 2017), playwright Faith Ng, director Claire Wong, and dramaturg Huzir Sulaiman return with Hard Mode, a riveting deep dive into the world of Gen Alpha.
Adam has lived in Sengkang his whole life, and things don’t really change around here. Except nothing is quite the same anymore.
The indomitable Sengkang Squad — Adam, Rian, and XY — have split up into different secondary schools, and it’s been pretty hard making new friends (they’re betas with no rizz?). K-pop stan besties Arissa and Maya have found community in the huge online fanbase, but somehow nothing’s as lonely as real life.
With mounting pressures from parents, friends, school, and their own expectations, they don’t feel like children any longer — but also no closer to being grown-ups. What exactly is this limbo stage called teenagehood? And where is the tutorial for being an adult?
Critically acclaimed playwright Faith Ng’s new work embraces the beautiful messiness of youth and friendship with her keen understanding and sensitive portrayal of life as we know it. Huzir Sulaiman’s deft dramaturgy sculpts this illuminating work while veteran director Claire Wong delicately brings this masterpiece to the stage with affirming tenderness and unflinching honesty. With a fresh, exciting ensemble cast comprising Chaney Chia, Izzul Irfan, Janine Ng, Kyra Lefebvre, and Shahid Nasheer, Hard Mode confronts the joys, heartaches and adventures of coming of age.
A love letter to the perennial task of growing up and navigating the world, Hard Mode is essential viewing for the youth of today, and everyone who seeks to understand them.

Gema Dari Menara (Echoes from the Minaret) Film Screening
Journey back to 1968 with Brunei Darussalam’s first feature film, Gema Dari Menara (Echoes From The Minaret). This compelling family drama, centred around a dutiful son and his rebellious siblings, serves as a cautionary tale against the growing secularisation of Bruneian society. Despite its moral undertones, the film offers a rare glimpse into the more liberal culture of pre-independence Brunei. Mostly unseen since its debut, Gema Dari Menara is a captivating time capsule that brings forgotten local stories to life on the big screen.
The film will be followed by a post-screening Q&A with Dr. Kathrina Mohd Daud, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, and moderated by Suraya Suhairi from Global Cultural Alliance.
The post-screening Q&A will be held in English.
Special thanks to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Negara Brunei Darussalam for granting permission to screen this film and to National Gallery Singapore for providing a copy of the film with English Subtitles.
This screening of Gema Dari Menara is part of The Idea of North 2024 – a four-day festival organised by Global Cultural Alliance to commemorate the 40th anniversary of bilateral relations between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
